Blessings in a Backpack was started in 2005, in Louisville, Kentucky. Founder Stan Curtis felt that by providing nourishment to less fortunate children within the public schools system, he could remove one of the obstacles in their path to learning. Blessings in a Backpack has now grown to service over 50 schools across the U.S. The program provides, through a “network of volunteers and school officials” a backpack filled with nonperishable, easy to prepare foods for underprivileged children to take home for the weekend. Items such as peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, rice, pasta, and dry cereal are provided through donations from private citizens and discounts from supermarkets. All students served are recipients of the national Free and Reduced Meal/Lunch program and enrolled in K-5 in Title 1 public schools. Most of these children are from single parent families or families classified as “working poor” who are employed but do not earn a substantial income. A donation of only $80 feeds one child in the program for a full school year and is tax deductible. “Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance” have all been attributed to this worthy program.
